DEEP SEA FISHING CLUB MINUTES FOR

MARCH 6TH 2010

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 20 new members were introduced.  Approximately 200 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the February 6th meeting were read and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Bob Seguin described the club website for the new members and asked that anyone who wanted to be added to the club bulk email list, see him after the meeting.  Tom Martin gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Contact Tom Martin, Treasurer, if you want further details. Recipes are available at the info tables in the rear. Copies of the new Florida Saltwater Fishing Regulations are also available.  This covers the period of January 1st thru June 30th.  A flyer is also available to sign on an online petition  to congress about better fisheries management.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  February was pretty much a wasted month due to cold weather/water and high winds.Some were caught on a Sunday trip on the Pastime Princess. 

OLD BUSINESS:    The next fish fry is scheduled for Thursday, April 1st at Camp Geneva.  Tickets are on sale today.  You must pay your dues before purchasing a ticket.  After today tickets must be purchased directly form President Belter.  They will not be sold at the door.

NEW BUSINESS:  The Fishing Trip schedule for March and April was presented. This includes trips to the Gulf, the Atlantic, and to the flats.  You may view this schedule and details on any of these trips, on the Fishing Trips Web Page on our website, or contact the appropriate individual listed on the Home Page.  

The Villages Outdoor Expo is scheduled for the weekend of March 13th and 14th at the La Hacienda Rec Center.  For information and details see the Spring Expo web page on this site.  To volunteer your services, call Everett Belter or Bob Seguin. 

OTHER  BUSINESS:  Bob Wakefield is recovering from back surgery.  Drop by and say hello at 1824 Madero Drive or call him at 259-0633. 

Bob Seguin is making a trip to Ft. Stewart next week and will talk to the Captain of the Skinny Dipper, a 6-pack about potential trips for the club.  Even though this is a 3+ hour trip, it is within minutes of the gulf stream and cuts the boat travel time meaning more fishing time.  Bob will bring back some info.  Bob is also attending a VFW seminar on veterans burial rights.  He will provide info to anyone who requests it. 

Phil Hepp plans trips out to the middle ground on a 77 foot catamaran.  Trips are 39 hours in duration.  For cost and other info, contact Phil at 259-0474.

Bud Mangels said there is a 10% discount at Lowe's for veterans as long as they produce the proper ID.  If you have any questions, call Bud at 750-6655.

FEBRUARY 6TH 2010

 

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 12 new members were introduced.  Approximately 140 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the January 2nd meeting were read and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Bob Seguin described the club website for the new members and asked that anyone who wanted to be added to the club bulk email list, see him after the meeting.  Everett Belter gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Contact Tom Martin, Treasurer, if you want further details. Recipes and fruit are available at the info tables in the rear. Copies of the new Florida Saltwater Fishing Regulations are also available.  This covers the period of January 1st thru June 30th.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for January 21st was blown out but rescheduled for January 28th.  Grunts provided most of the catch.  No Haf n Haf trips were scheduled due to the closed grouper/snapper ban.  The Pastime Princess trip boated a whopping 136 nice trigger fish up to 5 pounds and also lots of sea bass.  Three gallons of fish were donated for the fish fry.  Flats fishing trips out of Crystal River also were hampered by cold weather but managed to boat a few fish.  Four Gulf Grouper trips were scheduled but only one produced the limit of gag grouper.  Cold weather/water was again the reason for slow fishing. 

OLD BUSINESS:    The next fish fry is definitely scheduled for April 1st.  Tickets are on sale today and at the March meeting.  You must pay your dues before purchasing a ticket.

The annual Bass Pro Shop Spring Fling Exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th. A villages bus will be made available at a cost of $12.  There will be lectures by fishing pros and seminars.  This trip is sponsored by the Freshwater Fishing Club.  For details or to sign up, call Jerry Echols at 250-9839.

JANUARY 2ND 2010

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for December was blown out.  The Haf n Haf trips were also blown out.  The Pastime Princess trip encountered rough water but manages to boat some snapper and kingfish.  Bill Smock also went out on a Sunday trip and won the boat pool with a nice snapper.  Flats fishing trips out of Crystal River also were hampered by weather but managed to boat a few fish.  Two Gulf Grouper trips boated  the limit of gag grouper while the rest were weathered out.

THE NATIONAL MARINE  FISHERIES SERVICE HAS FORMALLY IMPLEMENTED A BAN ON RED SNAPPER FROM  JANUARY 4TH TO JUNE 1ST IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.  A  BAN HAS ALSO BEEN ENFORCED ON ALL SPECIES OF GROUPER FISHING FROM JANUARY  1ST TO MAY 1ST.  This is in dispute by commercial and sports fishermen and a law suit is being planned to attempt to overturn this decision.  IN ADDITION GROUPER FISHING WILL BE CLOSED IN THE GULF FROM FEBRUARY THRU MARCH, AND TROUT FISHING DURING FEBRUARY.

OTHER BUSINESS:  The spring picnic has been tentatively scheduled for April 1st at Camp Geneva.  You donations of fish are needed now especially with the upcoming bans on grouper, snapper and trout.

DECEMBER 5TH 2009

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 20 new members were introduced.  Approximately 110 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the November 7th meeting were read and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Bob Seguin described the club website for the new members and asked that anyone who wanted to be added to the club bulk email list, see him after the meeting.  Tom Martin gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Tom has checks available for refund to members who signed up for the Pastime Princess trip in November which was cancelled.  Please contact him for return of your check.  Recipes and lead sinkers are available at the info tables in the rear.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for November produced a few grouper, with Les Pickance taking the big fish 1st prize.  Loads of grunts were also boated.  One Haf n Haf trip was extremely successful with 13 red snapper, 16 trigger fish, 2 grouper and several other species brought aboard.  See the fish tales page for some nice pics.  Pastime Princess trip was weathered out, but club member Bill Smock went out on a Sunday trip and caught some nice red snapper.  No report given for flats fishing trips out of  Cedar Key  or Crystal River.  The Gulf Grouper trip boated a nice limit of gag grouper and one red..  A new six pac is being looked at for sailing out of Ft Pierce.  We are in the process of checking it out.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL, THROUGH THE NOAA FISHERIES SERVICE HAS ANNOUNCED A BAN ON RED SNAPPER FOR SIX MONTHS BEGINNING JANUARY 4TH IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.  This is in dispute by commercial and sports fishermen and a law suit is being planned to attempt to overturn this decision.

OTHER BUSINESS:  In accordance with the bylaws, a nominating committee was appointed consisting of Bud Mangels, Don Good, and Arlene Cash.  The committee made a motion to suspend the club bylaw that permits the current board to operate a maximum of two years.  This motion was unanimously approved.  The committee then proposed that the same board members be re-elected for another 2 year period.  This was agreed to by the current board and was unanimously approved by the members present at the meeting.  As a token of appreciation to the board, club member Butch Ballot proposed that the board members be given one free trip on any vessel during the year.  This was also unanimously approved and is available for board members to use if they so desire.

NOVEMBER 7TH 2009

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 18 new members were introduced.  Approximately 160 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the October 3rd meeting were read and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Tom Martin gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Recipes and Pastime Princess maps are available at the info tables in the rear.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for October produced a few grouper, with Tom Martin taking 1st prize a with mangrove snapper.  One Haf n Haf trip was weathered out , but the second on the 29th some nice red snapper, sea bass, shark and a whopping 32 pound gag grouper. Pastime Princess trip was slow, but several black sea bass and a few snapper were brought aboard.  Flats fishing trips out of  Cedar Key were slow but some spanish macks were caught.  Trips out of Crystal River boated lots of  nice reds and  spanish macks.  The Sanitarium vessel is not longer being used.  Trips are being scheduled on a new vessel, the Gulf Grouper, with the first trip scheduled for November 16h.  A new six pac is being looked at for sailing out of Ft Pierce.  We are in the process of checking it out.

OCTOBER 3RD 2009

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 24 new members were introduced.  Approximately 160 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the September 5th meeting were read by VP Bob Seguin and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Tom Martin gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Webmaster Bob Seguin gave a brief summary of the club website and asked all club members with access to a computer to check the website as often as possible to look for schedule changes, upcoming events, etc. Also, if you want your email address to be added to the group website mailing list, please see Bob after the meeting or send him an email.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for September produced a few grouper, with Vernon Cash taking 1st prize and Tom Martin taking 2nd.  Several buckets of keeper grunts were also donated for the fish fry.  Mary Paulsboe hauled in a nice keeper kingfish also. The Haf n Haf trip caught several snapper, one nice mahi-mahi and lots of puppy shark for the picnic.  The Pastime Princess trip was slow, but several black sea bass and a cuda were brought aboard.  Flats fishing trips out of  Cedar Key were slow,  but some spanish macks were caught.  A problem arose with skipper Don so Cpt Dan and Cpt Fred will probably be used in the future.  Trips out of Crystal River boated lots of  nice reds and  spanish macks.  However, during one trip the boat and a rock met and said hello!  So it is temporarily out of business.  Check the website for further status.  No Sanitarium trips were scheduled.

OTHER BUSINESS:  The fall fish fry, is now scheduled for Thursday, November 5th.  Tickets are on sale now and must be purchased today.  After the meeting, anyone wanting tickets must call Everett Belter or Tom Martin and pay for them ahead of time.  Tickets will not be sold at the gate.   IT'S STILL NOT TO LATE TO SAVE AND DONATE SOME OF YOUR CATCH TO EVERETT BELTER FOR THE FISH FRY.  CAN'T HAVE A FRY WITHOUT FISH!!!!!!  Lots of good prizes will be available for the raffle. 

There will be a benefit concert for Lou Del Prete who suffered a major stroke some months ago and the Leesburg Boys Club at the Church on the Square on October 29th at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are available for $15 or $20 at the Villages Ticket Box Office.  Martha Schinke was in a recent automobile accident and is recovering.  So no donuts today.  Here's hoping she recovers soon.
