DEEP SEA FISHING CLUB MINUTES FOR

JUNE 5TH 2010

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 05 new/returning members were introduced.  Approximately 120 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the May 1st meeting were summarized and approved with two minor changes. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Bob Seguin described the club website for the new members and asked that anyone who wanted to be added to the club bulk email list, see him after the meeting.  President Belter gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Contact Tom Martin, Treasurer, if you want further details. Copies of the new Florida Saltwater Fishing Regulations are available.  This covers the period of January 1st thru June 30th. 

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The May trip on the Thunder produced grunts and two keeper grouper.  The Pastime Princess trip boated a variety of fish including a giant 3-pound grunt caught by Everett Belter.  The Haf n Haf trip was very successful with a limit of amberjacks, dolphin and kingfish brought aboard.  The Gulf Grouper trips were very successful with amounts of 5 and 14 (includes 2 red grouper) nice keeper size grouper plus lots of large grunts caught.  Flats fishing is picking up but should improve in June.  Three nice specs plus a boatload of 14 1/2 inch throw backs were caught on the pontoon boat..

OLD BUSINESS:    To clear up some apparent confusion, President Belter reminded all that the Thunder trips leave from Laurel Manor at 0530 and cost $70 including the bus.  The Pastime Princess trips leave from Mulberry Rec Ctr  at 0630 and cost $50 plus the bus if it is used. 

NEW BUSINESS:  The Fishing Trip schedule for June/July was presented. This includes trips to the Gulf, the Atlantic, and to the flats.  You may view this schedule and details on any of these trips, on the Fishing Trips Web Page on our website, or contact the appropriate individual listed on the Home and Fishing Trips pages.  

A new flats fishing trip was tested by Howard Bond and Glenn Kangas.  They were fairly successful boating several types of fish.  It sails out of  Spring Hill, Florida.  The skipper can provide either a small skiff type boat or a pontoon boat. Cost is $200 for 2 persons/one half day trip on the skiff, or $200 for up to 5 persons/one half day trip on the pontoon boat.  The club does not plan to schedule monthly charters but those members wanting to try it out should contact the skipper direct as follows:  Call Captain Larry Roderick at 352-835-3785 or visit his website at:  www.flatsslamfishingcharters.com or email him at larryroderick@earthlink.net.  You may also call Glenn or Howard for information on their trip.

OTHER  BUSINESS:  Red snapper season opens in the Gulf on June 1st.  Gag grouper opened in the Atlantic May 1st.  The red snapper season closure in the Atlantic has been extended for an additional 6 months.

MAY 1ST 2010

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 30 new/returning members were introduced.  Approximately 150 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the April 3rd meeting were summarized and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. Bob Seguin described the club website for the new members and asked that anyone who wanted to be added to the club bulk email list, see him after the meeting.  He also stated that the website recently passed the 20,000 hit mark recently and thanked everyone for their support.  Tom Martin gave the treasurer’s report to include a summary of the monthly income and expenses.  Contact Tom Martin, Treasurer, if you want further details. Copies of the new Florida Saltwater Fishing Regulations are available.  This covers the period of January 1st thru June 30th. 

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  April was a better month with a ton of large grunts and a few keeper grouper caught aboard the Thunder.  The Pastime Princess was blown out, but the Cash's and Bill Smock did pretty good on a Sunday trip boating some nice mangrove and vermillion snapper.  No Haf n Haf trips were scheduled.  The Gulf Grouper trips were very successful with amounts of 12, 10, 8 and 7 nice keeper size grouper plus lots of large grunts caught.  Flats fishing is picking up but should improve in May.  High winds hampered most of the trips.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  March was pretty much a wasted month due to cold weather/water and high winds. However, Vernon Cash caught several puppy sharks on a Sunday trip on the Pastime Princess and donated them to the club for the fish fry.  The Thunder also produced lots of grunts for the fish fry.  Spanish mackerel, trout and reds are beginning to show up in the flats. 

OLD BUSINESS:   The fish fry on April 1st was well attended by 177 folks and all seemed to have a good time.  Thanks to all the volunteers.

President Everett Belter called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Visitors and 20 new members were introduced.  Approximately 200 members attended.  President Belter gave a brief summary of the types of fishing trips the club offers and that anyone who wants to learn more about the club may stay after the meeting.  The condensed minutes for the February 6th meeting were read and approved. Detailed minutes are available at each meeting or on the website. FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  February was pretty much a wasted month due to cold weather/water and high winds.Some were caught on a Sunday trip on the Pastime Princess. 

OLD BUSINESS:    The next fish fry is scheduled for Thursday, April 1st at Camp Geneva.  Tickets are on sale today.  You must pay your dues before purchasing a ticket.  After today tickets must be purchased directly form President Belter.  They will not be sold at the door.

OTHER  BUSINESS:  Bob Wakefield is recovering from back surgery.  Drop by and say hello at 1824 Madero Drive or call him at 259-0633. 

Bob Seguin is making a trip to Ft. Stewart next week and will talk to the Captain of the Skinny Dipper, a 6-pack about potential trips for the club.  Even though this is a 3+ hour trip, it is within minutes of the gulf stream and cuts the boat travel time meaning more fishing time.  Bob will bring back some info.  Bob is also attending a VFW seminar on veterans burial rights.  He will provide info to anyone who requests it. 

Phil Hepp plans trips out to the middle ground on a 77 foot catamaran.  Trips are 39 hours in duration.  For cost and other info, contact Phil at 259-0474.

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for January 21st was blown out but rescheduled for January 28th.  Grunts provided most of the catch.  No Haf n Haf trips were scheduled due to the closed grouper/snapper ban.  The Pastime Princess trip boated a whopping 136 nice trigger fish up to 5 pounds and also lots of sea bass.  Three gallons of fish were donated for the fish fry.  Flats fishing trips out of Crystal River also were hampered by cold weather but managed to boat a few fish.  Four Gulf Grouper trips were scheduled but only one produced the limit of gag grouper.  Cold weather/water was again the reason for slow fishing. 

OLD BUSINESS:    The next fish fry is definitely scheduled for April 1st.  Tickets are on sale today and at the March meeting.  You must pay your dues before purchasing a ticket.

The annual Bass Pro Shop Spring Fling Exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th. A villages bus will be made available at a cost of $12.  There will be lectures by fishing pros and seminars.  This trip is sponsored by the Freshwater Fishing Club.  For details or to sign up, call Jerry Echols at 250-9839.

JANUARY 2ND 2010

FISHING TRIP REPORTS:  The Thunder trip for December was blown out.  The Haf n Haf trips were also blown out.  The Pastime Princess trip encountered rough water but manages to boat some snapper and kingfish.  Bill Smock also went out on a Sunday trip and won the boat pool with a nice snapper.  Flats fishing trips out of Crystal River also were hampered by weather but managed to boat a few fish.  Two Gulf Grouper trips boated  the limit of gag grouper while the rest were weathered out.

THE NATIONAL MARINE  FISHERIES SERVICE HAS FORMALLY IMPLEMENTED A BAN ON RED SNAPPER FROM  JANUARY 4TH TO JUNE 1ST IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.  A  BAN HAS ALSO BEEN ENFORCED ON ALL SPECIES OF GROUPER FISHING FROM JANUARY  1ST TO MAY 1ST.  This is in dispute by commercial and sports fishermen and a law suit is being planned to attempt to overturn this decision.  IN ADDITION GROUPER FISHING WILL BE CLOSED IN THE GULF FROM FEBRUARY THRU MARCH, AND TROUT FISHING DURING FEBRUARY.

OTHER BUSINESS:  The spring picnic has been tentatively scheduled for April 1st at Camp Geneva.  You donations of fish are needed now especially with the upcoming bans on grouper, snapper and trout.
